Gas safety week

Gas safety week

The importance of a professional boiler installation in Manchester is even more poignant this Gas Safety Week, as a father who lost his daughter due to a faulty gas boiler is speaking out about the importance of annual servicing.

ITV reported that Gordon Samuel, whose daughter Katie Haines died after inhaling the gas leaked from a faulty boiler, is calling for a change in the law.

All responsible boiler owners know to have their gas boilers serviced annually to ensure their system is fully functioning and their home is safe from faults and leaks, but at present, it is not compulsory for gas boilers to be annually serviced – which is especially dangerous when illegal fitters could have carried out the installation.

“When a car goes for its MOT, it is subject to industry standard checks, yet a gas boiler can be issued with a safety certificate with little more than a quick visual check,” he was quoted as saying.

Samuel also wants to see carbon monoxide alarms made compulsory to prevent more deaths.

Gas Safety Week, coordinated by the Gas Safe Register, gives the industry a platform to communicate the importance of gas safety to the public. In 2016, more than 6,000 supporters took part, raising awareness about boiler maintenance across the country, both in terms of domestic gas safety, and gas safety awareness in commercial environments.

The Awareness Week was launched in 2011 and has been gaining support year on year and helped to educate young people about gas safety thanks to campaigns such as My Gas Safe Hero competition, which encouraged the children of registered Gas Safe Engineers to draw them as a superhero.
